Slow Windows: how to fix it in 2026 without a panic format
Startup, disk, RAM, bloatware and the cleaner myth. The order users actually feel.

A format is the ending, not the first spell. A slow Windows is usually a full disk or an HDD, 40 startup programs, a second antivirus on top of Defender, or 8 GB of RAM plus Chrome. This is the order that returns desktop “FPS”.
1. Disk and space
If C: has under 15–20 GB free, Windows suffers. Empty the recycle bin, Downloads, temporary files, old Windows copies. A 5400 rpm HDD in 2026 is the number-one “it is thinking” cause. A 500 GB SSD feels like another PC. Clone it and do not look back.
2. Startup apps
Task Manager → Startup. Disable everything that is not GPU, audio or your one antivirus. Teams, Adobe, game launchers, RGB and updaters can wait until you open them. That cuts boot time more than it speeds up Word already open.
3. RAM and Chrome
8 GB + browser + Discord + a game = swap and pain. 16 GB is the comfortable floor. Close tabs. Do not install three “RAM boosters”: they are placebo. Task Manager tells you who is eating the gigabytes.
4. Bloat and the second antivirus
One antivirus. Up-to-date Defender is enough for most people. Two engines fight and eat CPU. Uninstall cleaner toolbars. Disk Cleanup and Storage Sense are enough.
5. When a format is right
If the machine has three years of fairground software, malware you cannot shake, or a Windows 7-to-11 stack of rugs, a clean install on SSD is cheaper than more patches. Copy documents. Note serials. Do not copy the whole Program Files folder.
FlexChar covers updates that break PCs (and the ones that fix them). This page is the “slow Windows” anchor. Continue with basic privacy, free tools, and the FPS guide if the same box also games.
Frequently asked questions
CCleaner or similar?
You do not need them. Windows already cleans. Those tools have been too clever more than once.
Do visual effects matter?
On a 2012 PC, a bit. On an SSD with 16 GB, you barely notice. Prioritise disk and startup.
