WhatsApp backup not working: 2026 fix
Google Drive, iCloud, space, Wi‑Fi and the phone swap. What to check before you lose the chat.

Chat is not “in WhatsApp forever”. It lives on your phone and, if you are lucky, in a backup. People learn the backup failed on the day the glass dies. This is the checklist before that day and the day after.
Android and Google Drive
WhatsApp Settings → Chats → Backup. Look at the date. If it is weeks old, there is no miracle: there is Drive space, the right Google account and Wi‑Fi. Mobile data is often blocked on purpose. A Drive full of photos on the 15 GB free tier is the classic cause.
iPhone and iCloud
Full iCloud means no backup. WhatsApp will not fit in 5 GB if you already keep photos. Phone Settings → your name → iCloud → storage. Tapping “now” ten times does nothing. WhatsApp also needs to stay in the foreground for a while the first time.
Switching phones
Do not wipe the old one until you see chats on the new one. On Android, the Google account must match. iPhone to iPhone: iCloud. Crossing ecosystems has official tools that change every year — follow those, not an APK from a reel.
Encrypted backups
If you turned on backup encryption, put the password in a manager, not a scrap of paper. Without it the backup is a brick. That is the design, not a bug.

Can I recover chats without a backup?
Almost never. A shop can sometimes image storage if the phone still boots. Do not pay for Instagram miracles.

If the option is on, yes — that is why it is huge. You can back up chats only and keep media in Google Photos / iCloud Photos.
