Here are the top 9 essential defensive tips that will apply to any mode you play in Madden 24.
Setting the Edge on Defense - Use outside contain (L2 + L1) to add containment to any defensive formation. Ideally, you don't want to have to blitz to stop the run as it can leave your defense vulnerable if your opponent passes.
Route Recognition and User Control - Practice controlling a linebacker or safety. The more you practice, the better you will become at recognizing route combinations, leading to more user interceptions.
Trust Your Defense - If your assignment on a play is to cover a specific area, don't leave that area open by running out of it. Trust your defense to do its job.
Blitzing - Even when blitzing, keep the outside contain on. I typically use outside contain on every play as it helps stop outside runs and keeps scrambling quarterbacks in the pocket.
Mix It Up on Defense - Keep your opponent guessing by mixing up your defensive plays. Make them look alike or disguise them to confuse your opponent. Call cover 2 with the corners backed off like cover 4, or call cover 4 with the corners pressed. Mix it up and disguise your defensive strategies.
Attack the Ball - Don't be afraid to jump a route if you anticipate where your opponent is throwing. However, be careful not to get too far out of position and risk getting burned. If you see a route combination and think that's where the pass is going, go after it!
Player Position - Ensure your players are always in the best position. If a player is not lined up properly, move them! Depending on the rules of your league, you may need to use a shift or man align to get them in position. Don't leave a player out of position, as a skilled offensive player will take advantage of it.
Ratings Matter - Scheme is more important than the team, but having great players helps. When you have a strong defensive line that can crush the pocket with just a four-man rush, it makes playing defense much easier. Similarly, having a lockdown corner allows you to leave them on an island. Your scheme is crucial, but great players provide versatility within that scheme.
Situational Football - Understand the situation and play accordingly. If you're ahead in the fourth quarter and your opponent needs to cover a lot of ground, don't take unnecessary risks by sending risky blitzes. Stay back and play smart.
